favorite restaurants

Here is a list of my favorite Vegan Friendly restaurants in the North Jersey area (in alphabetical order):

Green Papaya (http://www.greenpapayanj.com/) in River Edge, NJ
The best bubble tea I’ve found in North Jersey so far. They even have taro bubble tea, which is rare around here. They have faux chicken entrees for every entree (or their own homemade tofu). Cuisine: Thai

Maywood Pancake House (http://www.maywoodpancakehouse.com/) in Maywood, NJ
Great tofu scrambles and vegan chili. They even make their own vegan pancakes, waffles and french toast. Cuisine: All American (lots of brunch and lunch options)

Mesob Ethiopian (http://www.mesobrestaurant.com/) in Montclair, NJ
All their vegetable entrees are vegan friendly and you get to eat with your hands. Cuisine: Ethiopian

Penang (http://www.penangcuisine.com/lodi/) in Lodi, NJ
A nice vegetarian menu with a staff that’s easy-going about veganizing the options. The best pad thai I have ever found and trust me, I’ve looked! Cuisine: Thai, Malaysian and Indian

Sweet Avenue Bakeshop (http://www.sweetavenuebakeshop.com/) in Rutherford, NJ
I love their vegan cupcakes: moist and delicious. A lot of non-vegans I know love this place – that’s how good it is. Cuisine: Dessert

Van Gogh’s Ear Cafe (http://www.vangoghsearcafe.com/) in Union, NJ
Their menu clearly marks their dishes as vegan, vegetarian or vegan by request.  This includes a falafel wrap, hummus platter, and a really delicious penne entree. Cuisine: Mix including Italian, Mediterranean, etc.

Veggie Heaven in Teaneck, Montclair, and Denville, NJ
Asian style cuisine made vegan. They have everything from tofu ice cream to vegan cakes. They have sweet and sour “chicken” and general tso’s “chicken” as well as vegan sushi. They also serve other types of cuisines including veggie burgers, Indian food, etc. This is my favorite go-to spot. Cuisine: Chinese, Japanese & many others (including Indian, Thai, etc. depending on specials)

If there is a vegan-friendly restaurant I should check out,
e-mail me at janice@ohhsofattening.com and I will add it to the list!

    • I love where I live, there are so many options and different ethnic cuisines. You can get almost anything within a 30 minute drive.

Also, in less than 15-20 mins (if there’s no traffic), I will have crossed the GWB and be in NYC! It’s awesome. But my rent is much higher than some areas – at least it’s not Midtown prices! I get to enjoy the City without paying City prices on rent.
